How we keep forwhen.nz accurate, current, and free to use.

forwhen.nz is a free, plain-language guide to the New Zealand family-care journey. People often arrive here at a hard moment, so getting the details right matters. This page explains who writes it, where the information comes from, and how we keep it current.

Who writes this

forwhen.nz is written and maintained by a New Zealand family who went through this, not by a law firm or a clinic. It began with one family's experience of helping a parent stay safe at home, and then of the days after a death. You can read that story on the about page.

The guides are general information, written for the family at the kitchen table rather than for clinicians or lawyers. They do not replace advice for your own situation. Where a question genuinely needs a lawyer, a doctor, or a financial adviser, we say so and point you to one.

Where the information comes from

Every guide is built from primary New Zealand sources and checked against them: government agencies such as Work and Income, Inland Revenue, ACC, Health NZ (Te Whatu Ora), and the Ministry of Justice; New Zealand legislation; and recognised non-commercial organisations such as Hospice NZ, Age Concern, and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Each page carries a Sources section linking to the authorities it relies on, so you can check the original yourself. When the figures here and the linked source ever disagree, the source is the final word.

How we keep it current

Dollar figures and entitlements change on a regular cycle. New Zealand benefit and grant rates are usually updated each April, and residential care subsidy thresholds each July. We review the guides periodically and show a "Last reviewed" date at the foot of every page.

The whole site was fact-checked against primary sources in June 2026, including every dollar amount, phone number, legal threshold, and external link. We also keep the tone neutral and even-handed: we describe the options and the trade-offs, and we do not steer you toward one choice.

Independence and no marketing

forwhen.nz carries no advertising, has no accounts, and sells nothing. We do not recommend, link to, or take payment from any commercial provider. When a guide describes a type of service, we describe the category and how to compare it, rather than naming a vendor for you to use.

Our two sister products, Haile and Beforehand, are built by the same New Zealand team. Where one genuinely fits what a guide is about, we mention it plainly and mark it as ours. Everywhere else we point you to whoever is genuinely right.
